Raelene’s Point Avoid Ride

On Sunday morning we all met at 9am at Coffin Bay town jetty for a ride to the National Park and eventual end destination of Point Avoid. It was great to have Dene, Max, Jo and Mary ride to Templetonia Lookout. A first for Max and a wonderful achievement for Dene, Well done!
Jo was on her Bike Friday and as it was Sunday - it became a Sunday Funday. Mary was happy to ride as monitor for safety for the day on her new Trek Maddone 5.2, it’s a beautiful looking machine, and goes like crazy!
The group rested at Templetonia until we all arrived and then the rest of us took off to the bottom of the
hill and left UP the hill toward Point Avoid.
Congratulations to Caroline who achieved the climb with the verbal encouragement
from Peggy, Terry and Raelene - a great effort as this was the first time since her first ever ride and it was a different story!
Dave found that he could wait for the slow one, - he doesn't think he could ride as slow as me uphills. It was great to see Ann Lord out on her mountain bike, Mig on a road bike going for the distance training for the Tour Down Under, along with Brian Ashton, and the rest of the team. Pat and Marie obviously benefitted from their recent walking tour O/S as they had no problems rolling over the hills. Richard was hard to keep under speed, but we are used to that! I am sure that I saw him coming back from Golden Island lookout before he actually got to the morning tea stop at Point Avoid. It was great to have Kingsley with a sumptuous morning tea laid out courtesy of Murray Business Solutions, with the clubs new chairs to sit and enjoy the view across the water. The morning tea was a thank you for members who attended a recent event at the Lincoln Hotel.

35k ride from Horsham to Murtoa.
We camped in little Caravan Park next to a lake.We had a tailwind today. A very easy ride. Great to catch up with all of our friends from the Adelaide touring cycling club. 16 of us on the ride with Liz and Roy to possibly join us in a couple of days.

‎79k ride from Murtoa to St Arnaud. Great ride into light head wind. Nice scenery and a little hill to finish with. Nice tea couple of beers and a wine. Sure beats working. Now to win xlotto so I can do it more often!

St Arnaud to Inglewood 60 ks ups and downs on the backroads. Bit warmer than yesterday.

Inglewood to Dunolly 40ks. nice ride along quiet back roads bit warmer again today.

‎40ks from Dunolly to Maldon. Great ride along the flat till lunch then climbing up till the town of Maldon. Beautiful very old gold mining town. Very hilly though. Rode up to the summit of mt Tarrengowan. Luckily on a bare bike after setting up camp. Superb 360 view of the surrounding countryside. Seen lots of evidence of the recent flood damage to the riverine infrastructure. Had lunch on the Loddon river where whole sheets of the bitumen road were lift and washed into the paddocks by the roadside.

During the night laying in the tent listening to the rain come down !

‎38ks from Maldon to Maryborough. Was fun in the rain especially after having to catch up to the others after having to fix another flatty for Raelene. Was a nice downhill after the climb into the town yesterday.

Rest day in Maryborough. We seen to our washing as well as looking around Maryborough. Great old train station where we all went for lunch. Off to Avoca tommorow. Rained all night and on and off all day.
Big thunderstorm had us racing back from town to everything put away before it hit. Lots of lightening and thunder. Some rain then a steamy afternoon. Have done the rounds of the shops again. Raelene has bought more food to cart tommorow.We should get to Avoca in time to see the town market.

‎43ks Maryborough to Avoca. Very humid day. Arrived too late for the market. Nice Caravan Park . Thunderclouds overhead! Great coffee shop in town.

‎45ks from Avoca to Clunes. Via Talbot. Rainy to start with then once at Talbot in came the strong wind. Made for a cold and wet last 17ks. Eating out tonight too cold and wet with no shelter to cook in to keep warm and dry.

Once again laying in the tent listening to the rain come down. Nanna nap time!

Clunes to Beaufort via the biggest windfarm in oz. 55 ks . Surprise it was windy. Wet to start with. Freezing cold only got to 12 c. Temp has been dropping since so it will be a cold night.

Beaufort to Arrarat 55ks great ride lot nicer day. Highlight?? Was running over a very large brown snake. I was riding about fifth in the peleton when there was a sudden slowdown and touch of wheels. I was watching this when I looked down just as th snake bumped under my wheels. He was not happy. He was ran over by about four or five of us. Raelene was not impressed!!!

‎55k ride Arrarat to Halls gap. Nice climb out of Arrarat. A few hills till morning tea then flat till nearlt at Halls gap. Ate in.Very nice CP right in the very centre of the town. About 15 resident kanaroos browsing around the tents! Stiff neck for the second day in a row is pissing me off. Rest day tommorow hopefully it will settle

Pouring @ Halls Gap stuck in the tent. Going out for tea so at least i will get out for a while. Lets hope it clears by the morning!

‎40 k ride into Wartook from Halls Gap . 20+ ks of rough sandy and gravelly corrugations. Then a good climb over Roses Gap. Older rundown caravan park. New owners are trying to improve it.

Last day of the ride Sunday. 44k ride Wartook to Horsham. Fast ride with a screaming tail wind. Made it into Horsham by 12.15am quick shower and change and pack up then head back to Adelaide.

Another very interesting And fun bike tour over. I got to see another very interesting part of the country. Its a shame that so many of the small country towns we passed through look to be really struggling to survive! Now to save up some more leave so I can go on another trip.

MTB Quorn ride 4th, 5th and 6th November.

8 people went to Quorn and they met Lucy and Ian at the pub for tea. 9 am start and followed by a ride to Walkery falls which was very beautiful even without the water cascading over them. Saturday night meal at the accommodation with plenty of wine and a lovely greek salad prepared by Lucy. Sunday morning a 8am departure was a rdie on a 47 k return ride out to Warren gorge. Jo nearly ran over a nice silvery snake on the way there. They saw several Kangaroos and looked at the very interesting rock formations. The ride home was on a different track with several grids and a great downhill coming down out the hills.

RIP PETER CLARKSON

Friends, family, work mates and cyclists attended the service for Peter Clarkson at the Marina Fisherman’s Memorial on Tuesday the 8th March.

Peter was a diver from the age of 15 and a conservationist and worldwide specialist on shells. He was also an avid cyclist. He was often seen of the Proper Bay road always with a huge grin on his face.

There will be a memorial ride for Peter Clarkson on 3rd April. Club members are encouraged to participate if they feel they are able.
There are several opportunities to join in at;
1. 8 am at Del Giorno's to ride to Coffin Bay in our own group.
2. Regroup of all the respective cycle groups will be at Beachcomber Cafe at 10am at Coffin Bay,
We will cycle as a group to Avoid Bay and probably arrive at midday.
We will have some funny face biscuits and orange juice there,(and I think if you have sandals for cycling, this would be a great time to wear them!) Peter only ever used sandals - Shimano preferably!
We will go back to somewhere, - maybe the Hotel at Coffin Bay to have some lunch if you feel inclined. It would be a great outing and opportunity to say a real farewell!

Dene's Mystery Ride

Sunday 20th February Dene led a mystery tour which started from the Coffin Bay boat ramp.
It was a mystery to us and fun entered the thoughts when he called the 9 other cyclists together and said, - we have enough Life Jackets for everyone!

Well, we were planning on riding our bikes, so life jackets wasn't on the agendas, but Dene had arranged a friend with a suitable vessel to carry us across the water to the spot where it was easy for all to walk on water!

We started out with the thought it would be a wet day, but as we turned into Coffin Bay the rain stopped and the sun came out, - so you can never judge the day unless you are there!
We had a ride leader well prepared to cater to our needs and he had paper towel and a tarp to sit on while we dried our feet ready for the ride.
Up the hill over the top and on toward Kellidie Bay the views were fantastic!
As we cycled through Kellidie, several people were looking at the spectacle that the bikes made and were wishing that they too were out on their bikes.

We headed into Wangary and turned on the back road to Minnie Ribbie creek road, and eventually through a creek crossing that was dry - ish, and then on to Airport road where we turned right toward Coffin Bay. The traffic was minimal and very courteous and we had a great time. At the bitumen, our ride leader turned us toward the coast again, and we followed the dirt path along the edge of the sea. We had only one puncture, (Dene had a tyre go flat) and one fall (Leonie had the opportunity to practice) and we arrived at Oyster Beds for a well-deserved coffee and time to chat about the days achievements.

Well done Dene!

Well what a perfect ride. Dene has done another superb job of scouting out a route and liasing with the local landowners to gain access for us. Thanks Deno. Eight of us set out on Dene's ride with two others Mary and Max taking a different route. The day was one of the best weather wise we have had for over three months. What a interesting ride we had. Lots of hill climbing on cockies back tracks. The crops look magnificant after all the rain we have had. The canola is a picture that defies description with fields of yellow stretching to the horizon. Arriving back at the old Koppio school site Kingsley has once again prepared a beautiful feast for us to munch out on. Kiwi you missed out on a great ride.

Ride Report Grand Slam No 4 - 150 k leg

On Sunday 22nd August the weather was kind enough to the riders participating in the Grand Slam Series. We left the Arteyria at 7.30 am and rode to the end of the bitumen at Sleaford, and back into town to the end of the boat ramp at Billy Lights Point. From there we travelled into the Marina in front of the fishing business areas for coffee and sustenance from the trailer. Kingsley had prepared morning tea and we were met by Lana and Pete who were giving their support to the riders for 60 kilometres.
Dene and met us at the top of Western Approach Road and a group of 7 riders continued to enjoy the morning ride.At the Cummins turnoff, Lana and Pete wished us well and turned back to Port Lincoln. Fay Daniels joined us with her support vehicle. This was good as we all felt that the traffic was more considerate to us from that point.
The wind was beginning to raise its head, just a little, and we soon had a turn off the highway into Coffin Bay to protect us from the slight wind we had with the trees each side of the road.At Coffin Bay we rode through into the National Park for a couple of kilometres to make sure we had completed 103kilometres before lunch.
Back at the house where we had lunch, Kingsley had again surpassed his role and had a warm chicken and salad lunch with warm bread and tea and coffee to follow.We were sufficiently restored after a bit of a rest and soon back on the bikes to complete the ride into Port Lincoln for yet another coffee.
All done, Mary and Nigel John and Raelene had completed the 150 kilometre ride and Dene had completed the 100 kilometre Mini Slam.We all felt very pleased with the way we cycled and in all, the performance of the traffic was considerate. Weather wise it was a great day,as we haven't had many good days for cycling since!

Final report on outcome KONA MAWSON MTB MARATHON RIDE

Sylvia Dansie and Mike Stockdale represented Port Lincoln at this inaugural event held earlier his month. The 360 km ride started at Blinman in the Flinders Ranges and followed the Mawson Bike trail to Melrose. It could be completed over 4 days in stages (75 riders) or straight through in pairs (48 riders).
Karin Laherstorfer had trained for this event with Sylvia, but was unable to ride after slipping over and tearing a hamstring just 9 days prior. Fortunately Mike was able to ride at short notice and team ’Hot Eyre’ made the Start line on June 11th.
The Mawson Trail is comprised of fire tracks, station tracks, a little single track, gravel roads and linking sections of sealed road.

The straight through duo ride was won by champion rider Chris Jongerwaard and partner Brett Anderson in 14 hours 9 minutes with 3 other duo male teams finishing in under 15 hours. Of the 24 teams (16 male, 3 female & 5 mixed), 5 were unable to finish mainly due to exhaustion.
Sylvia and Mike took 27 hours 55 minutes finishing ahead of two other duo teams in open competition. They took a 1.5 hour stop at the Hawker check point (after 12 hours) for warm food and shower, and then 2 hours at Quorn including a 1 hour nap.
“Hot Eyre’ average moving speed was 18.3 kph, with14.3 kph overall.
Energy expenditure was approximately 10,000 calories.
Phil Dansie provided team support and was a very welcome sight along the way.
Spectacular scenery awed riders, especially between Blinman and Rawnsley Bluff,.
Team ‘Hot Eyre’ had one puncture and just on dark, was briefly blocked by six or so large, horned bulls that thankfully gave way.
The ride was very challenging due to its length, scores of gully & creek crossings and a 14 hour long night. Good lights were essential.

Cycling in Germany and France with Raelene.

Four intrepid cyclists met at the airport on a Friday morning in May and embarked on a trip of a lifetime for some of them. We were met by Mary and Alan at the airport so that we had a group of 6 cyclists who were all on folding bikes. These proved to be extremely satisfactory for touring, as well as travelling on the plane. We were given better luggage allowance for these bikes. We landed in Frankfurt, in Germany, assembled the bikes, and loaded our luggage onto them and away we cycled through a Beech forest and eventually made our way 30km to Mainz.

We had a beautiful camp ground to stay at, so put up the tent and left our gear, and shopped for the food for the next few days and settled in. We were allowing 4 days here to look around and get all that we needed. By the time we took off to start the "real trip" we were well accustomed to the bikes and cycling on the right hand side of the road.

We had a very well planned tour, in that we started off beside the Rhine River, on canal paths, and bike ways, for several days, and gradually we wound our way up the hills into the hillside villages and started to experience real countryside. The language had changed for starters; - not German now but French, in the morning its "Morgen" in Germany but "Bon Jour" in French, so out came the language phrase books!
We enjoyed shopping at the local super marche and there were loads of different ones, and the people who recognised that we weren't local, tried to help and were very friendly. The different experiences made us really appreciate our own group dynamics and we looked out for each other all the time.

We visited historic places as we rode along and met up with another couple for a week and enjoyed their skills with language and bike riding very much, - I am hoping that they will come to Australia and we can cycle together again.

As we approached the Alps we realised that we had ridden into some fitness and this would help us when we needed it. Several of the hills made Australia look flat! We were now prepared for Alp D'Huez, the big hill that the Tour de France riders do most every year, - except this one! Alp d’Huez is 1,860m, 14 kilometres long and has 21 corners (where you can catch your breath) as the degree of climb is 10% for almost all the climb!

I very much enjoyed the scenery and the opportunity to meet new people. We rode the whole distance from Frankfurt to Bourg D'Oisons (south of Grenoble) and our total distance was 1,465km. In 5 weeks away, that isn't a big average, but it is not easy to ride a loaded bike in that terrain all day long. We were trying to be into camp by 3-30pm so that we had the tents up before the rain came at 4pm. It is so beautiful and green in Europe even in summer and we had no wind to speak of, and it wasn't cold. I would love to go back again next year!

I have loads of photos to remind me about the trip away though so that may have to do the job!

My Dad Bob in Adelaide has also been a bit crook so updating the website has moved down the priority list a bit. However things a back on track so hopefully I can get a lot more riding in as well as regular updates of the Blog.

Inaugural Kona Mawson Marathon Ride

Karen & I are now entered in the Inaugural Kona Mawson Marathon Ride as a Straight Through Duo Pair. 367 km from Blinman to Melrose starting at 0730 Friday June 11th. Cut off Finish time is 5:30pm Saturday. Phil is our official support crew.
We are team ‘Hot Eyre’.
Having completed our longest training ride last Sunday of 10.25 hours we are now tapering for the big day & night! We are equipped with GPS navigation, hydropacks, Perpetuem liquid nutrition, electrolytes, mobile phone, emergency tarpaulin, spare tire, 2 spare tubes, tools, matches, first aid gear, LED lights, Buff headwear, weather proof clothing & changes & cans of ‘V’. Hope that covers it!

MTB ride out to national park.

Absolutely Magnificent day. After cancelling the kayak portion of the day due to the bad weather forecast we were presented with one of those special days just made for cycling. No wind, nice temperature and lovely scenery. Six of us headed out with Jim joining us for the first time on a MTB ride. We rode out along the trail till the National park were we did a figure of eight suggested by our ride planner Dene who is now recovering nicely. Some sweet riding along some overgrown paths and trails led to some superb spots along the shore of Proper bay with lots of photos taken. A climb up the hill from the entrance led us to a very rocky hill and descent with Jim handling the challenge with ease. Leonie was a bit more careful not to come a gutser on the rocky trail. This was followed by a return ride along the Parnkalla trail returning to Del Giornos for a coffee. Finally we returned to Arteyria gallery for a sausage sizzle for lunch made by Ross' Folk music group.

THE RIVENDELL LIST OF TIPS FOR BETTER CYCLING.

Learn right away that the front brake is the most effective one, and to never lock the front wheel in dirt (or on the road, but it's more likely in dirt). Learn how far you can lean over without scraping a
pedal.

Learn to keep the inside pedal UP when you corner, and learn to ride safely in all conditions. Be the master and commander of your own bicycle.

Signal your approach to pedestrians, especially if they're old, and a bell is better than "On your left! right" If no bell, try clacking your brake levers. If all you got is "On your left! right" that's fine, but if you ride a lot on paths, get a bell.

At least one ride in 10, go without your sunglasses and gloves.

Sometime next month, put some double-sided cheap-style pedals on a good bike and ride in non-cycling garb. It works shockingly well, and sends a good message to would-be bicycle riders.

Carry an extra tube you can give to somebody with a flat tire and just a repair kit.

If you're a guy, don't try to be a mentor to every female cyclist you meet.

Don't ride in shoes you can't walk through an antique shop in.

Don't wear clothing that makes your sweat stink even more.

Don't think you'll go faster in a significant way if you and your bike become more aerodynamic.

Put a $20 bill inside your seat post or handlebar and hold it there, somehow.

Don't ride until you're confident you can fix a flat.

If you ride more than one bike, have a set of bring-along tools for each one. Learn how to remove your rear wheel (put the chain onto the small cog, etc.).

If you ride in a group, bring food for you and somebody who forgot to.

Go for a one-hour ride underdressed sometime, because it's good to be really cold on a bike every now and then.The reverse (overdressing in hot weather) is not necessary!

Never blame your bike or your health or anything else if you're the last one up the hill or in to the rest stop.

If your brake hoods are black, wrap your bars with a different color tape, so it doesn't look like a one-piece set-up.

Never let your chain squeak.

If you pass another rider going up a hill, say more than "Hi," but if it's a woman and you aren't, don't assume she wants to chit-chat. Treat her as you'd have a generic guy-rider treat your wife/daughter/girlfriend.

If you're a woman and it's a guy, you can chit-chat all you like, they won't mind.

If you see another rider approaching you from the rear and trying to catch you, let it happen. Fun is more important than fast.

Don't put any cyclist up on a pedestal, except Lon and Freddie.

Sometimes, bring normal food on your ride. Sometimes bring none. If you're reasonably
well-rested and have eaten anything at all in the last eighteen hours (and are not diabetic), you should be able to pedal your bike for two to three hours without supercharging your system with carbohydrates.

Believe it or not, carbs really do make you fat, and are necessary only for long, hard rides.

Shoot photos on your rides and give them away.

Feel comfortable mixing high tech and low tech, old and new parts and technologies, and don't apologise to anybody for it.

Compliment other people's bikes, especially if they're new.

Buy the cheapest helmet that fits well.

Try seersucker shirts for hot weather riding, and long-sleeved ones are best.

Don't underestimate fig bars.

If you get a new widget and like it, don't "swear by it."

Don't always shop by price and never ask for discounts at your local bike shop. Every time you go into a bike shop, spend at least $2, and if you ask a question and get good advice, spend $5.

If you buy a rack, don't ask for free installation.

Don't assume your bike shop is making money.

Ride only when you feel like it.

If you know a fast new rider, don't say, "You really ought to race."

If you see a stocky woman rider, don't suggest she race track.

Have at least one bike you feel comfortable riding in a downpour.

Ride in weather that keeps other cyclists indoors.

Never keep track of your pedaling cadence.

If you have a normal loop or ride, count the number of times you shift on it; then the next time you ride it, cut that in half and see if it makes any difference.

Learn to ride no-hands and to hop over obstacles, but not simultaneously.

Never hit a pedestrian. In traffic, be visible and polite. Don't feel as though you must be a role model for all other riders; be polite for selfish reasons.

If you have several bikes, set them up with different equipment but always ride the saddle you like best.

Don't try to keep up with faster descenders if you're not comfortable descending.

Never apologise for buying something that's not quite pro quality by saying, "I'm not going to race or anything."

If you buy a stock bike, do something to it that makes it the only one exactly like it in the world.

Don't think it's important to match front and rear hubs or rims.

If you borrow somebody else's bike, for a short test or a long ride, say something nice about it.

Always bring a pump.

Build at least one wheel.

Wear out something.

Don't ever describe any bike, no matter how inexpensive or dilapidated, as "a piece of crap."

If you get a fancy bike assembled by somebody else, allow them a scrape or two, especially if the bike is really expensive.

Anzac Day 2010 Ride

Short notice ride this morning. A small group of us went to the Dawn Service for the remembrance ceremony. We then returned home and returned to Arteyria with our mountain bikes. A nice ride out the Parnkalla trail to the National Park entrance followed.

Here we were met by Kingsley with a coffee and some snacks including some Anzac biscuits.

The spot he had chosen was perfect out of the wind and in the sun allowing us to bask in the cool but lovely sun. The three of us then returned to Port Lincoln along the trail to DGs for a coffee.
All of us paused to reflect on the sacrifice of our Servicemen and Servicewomen that allow us to enjoy democracy and freedom in this great country.

Mountain Biking at Port Pirie Masters Games 2010

Karen Lahestorfer and Sylvia Dansie travelled to Bundaleer Forest near Jamestown (60km East of Port Pirie) to compete. Support crew, Phil Dansie, helped at the event with reinflating punctured tyres, Cross Country race support vehicle and Dirt Crit lap counting & timing – much appreciated!

On the way, the Mawson Trail between Quorn and Melrose was explored, with a view to riding in the Blinman to Melrose Trail Ride in June. Interest still remains and the Flinders landscape certainly inspires.
We stayed in a Jamestown cabin Saturday night, only a short drive from Bundaleer Forest where you could camp. It was very refreshing to visit and ride in a different location.

A small group prepared for this inaugural event and soon discovered Three Corner Jacks were plentiful around the assembly area!
The 8 competitors (5 men & 3 women) suffered multiple punctures before the Cross Country Race! Those with self sealing Slimed tubes (Karen & most others) weren't too concerned as little beads of green slime bubbled out of their tyres but those without (certainly Sylvia) were, as tyres softened! The Start was delayed while tubes were changed & tyres pumped!

The excellent 18 km Cross Country race took Karen (W50-54) 1 hour 7 minutes with Sylvia (W55-59) 3 minutes later. Apart from deflating tyres, Sylvia was also a little concerned about her damaged, partially ‘mended’ front suspension. It was granny gear work up the first climb just after the start, with a single track zig zagging up and up. (The support vehicle had to find alternative routes when the going got tough.) Then undulating fire trails through pine & eucalypt forest, tracks through sheep country to another high point then back via the forest. Tyres stayed up for the duration fortunately and suspension coped.
Coffee & BBQ lunch preceded the afternoon Dirt Crit, a 1 km circuit around features including a dry creek, house ruin, trees, mesh ramp and sheep trough. Sylvia & Karen had serious doubts about starting, after struggling around a practice lap, but with medals on offer went for it! Final medal tally was 2 Gold each.
The Dirt Crit was a 20 minute ride plus 1 lap and skills mostly improved each lap. You had to stay between a roped course that wasn’t always easily seen. It amazes what can be done on a MTB! Rough drop into narrow, leaf littered creek bed section, sharp turn & between twin trunks of a gum with a steep creek bank behind, back across the creek and up bank, to the ruin and through the back door, no flooring so over steel mesh, out front door, avoid steep front steps by sharp turn after door sill onto narrow veranda and down a steep mesh ramp. Next a double creek crossing where you can use descent speed to carry you up the other side with a little practice, then turn to renegotiate the steep banks. Sylvia got a little cocky on her 3rd lap and with too much speed up stacked it spectacularly on the first up bank, alarming watchers. Back on bike to squeeze past the sheep trough and down a step, down, around , along and steady to conquer a steep mesh bridge, then along the creek, out of, then turn back in, down and up banks and through to the start for the next lap.
It was definitely a steep learning curve and looking forward to the next time!
This masters competition is on again in 2012 and it’s a great day but make sure your tubes are slimed! Sylvia has 2 very flat tyres now!

11th April Dene's Pillaworta hill MTB ride.

Great ride with 14 riders venturing out on the ride. Great to see 14 riders making the effort to join Dene on his ride. This was important to show that as a club that we appreciate the effort Dene puts into finding and developing rides in interesting and different places. Great to have Sylvia join us now she does not have the pressure of her ironman training keeping her busy. Karin and her rode out to the ride and back completing over 100ks for the day. It was good to see Brenton and Richard again. We all met at the Koppio old school site at 9 am. After getting the bikes off of the vehicles Dene rounded us all up and off we went. We rode east from the school site past the rose nursery washaway and up a reasonable climb on a graded road uphill. This allowed us to glimpse in the distance the communications tower on Pillaworta Hill in the distance. This was to be the destination for the day. The sky was kind to us with a few clouds but no significant threat of rain. After regrouping on the top of the first hill we shot down pulling up at the bottom and turning left along the valley floor along the Farmers track heading North. Winding along the valley floor we made steady progress along a very picturesque valley with trees, scrub and open farmland presenting different vistas as we climbed gradually towards the hills. Numerous gates were encountered with Clem getting an opportunity to close several different varieties of cockies gates. During the last week it must have been windy in them thar hills as there was no shortage of sticks laying all over the track. At one stage a whole branch was laying across the track necessitating a dismount to negotiate.

Getting closer to the Tower we started a reasonable climb, rising in stages up the green hills past dams with sheep gazing at those strange things on wheels winding past. Rising to the crest of the ridge a stunning view over the farming country towards Tumby Bay opened up for us.

Numerous photos were taken here. Climbing along the ridge we continued to make our way up towards the communication tower and the trig point at the very top.

Numerous gates later, fourteen of us made it to the top. It was quite cool at the top with jackets being pulled on ready for the descent. Lots of photos were taken of the surrounding views. Leonie had completed her first climb.

A fast descent followed with everyone taking care on the Buckshot gravel sections that Dene had briefed us on at the top. Coming past the farmhouse at the bottom the farmers dog fell in love with us. Jeff picked him up and took him for a ride back to the farmer’s house. The little fellow would not stop at home and chased us for several kilometres down the road towards Koppio. He was very persistent and very fit. Back on the nicely graded road it did not take us long to ride back down the road to get back to the school grounds for one of Kingsley’s legendary lunches.

Here we had a nice feed and several cups of coffee in the nice sunshine out of the wind. It was great to have Faye and Georgia join us here as well to catch up.
A big thankyou to Dene for the time and effort he puts into our MTB rides. It was great to see lots of riders joining us to sample some of Dene’s planning and effort. Thanks to Kingsley for lunch.
Lets keep up the attendance of these rides in the future as it makes them great fun doing them together.

21st March MTB ride

The Third-Sunday Ride for March went off-road again. The weather was perfect for cycling once again and three of us set off along Mortlock Tce, turning up Tennant St, left onto Grantala Rd and crossed N.W. Rd.
We were joined by two more riders in this section. We rode past the Dirt Circuit Track and along part of the access track beside the railway line. Back out to cross the manin road and along Pound Lane, which has been up-graded and much more pleasant to ride on, and on up and up Chapman Rd.
This was just to remind us that you don't get to enjoy a cuppa afterwards without working for it. Hyde Rd took us downhill to the highway where we cruised along the Investigator Trail and back into town. This was a short ride but a good one.
Hope to have more of you on the next ride!

Nice evening ride with seven people riding. Leonie and Max took a more sealed route at times while the rest had some small sections off road. It was a very pleasant evening with several regroups along the way. Max had yak with a French couple at the fuel berth while waiting for those that had taken a more scenic route. We then rode back through town to try out the new cycle path in front of the "Blue seas" motel. Riding back to Del Giornos for a coffee and some Pizza. Thanks to Raelene for leading this ride.

Some terribly sad news that the Peninsula Pedallers has lost one of our great supporters and friends.
Kathleen passed away recently while away on holidays in Tasmania.

Bike courses are being offered at several events this season. Non member fees are $5 for Street Park & $10 for Cross Country. Family maximum of $10 & $20. Junior/student & pensioner rates. Under 10 years free. More details on website.

The 'RIDE THE ALI WAY' Charity bike ride

The 'RIDE THE ALI WAY' Charity bike ride is a fundraising initiative raising money for Alison Oestmann and her family. Ali has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and we are aiming to raise $25,000. The ride will be fully supported and escorted via Police vehicle.

Planning for the ride is coming along nicely, the 6th to the 10th of May 2010 is now confirmed and the plan is as follows:

6 May - Dinner and fundraiser in Pt Lincoln at a venue TBC.
Acomm at this stage is at the Lions Hostel, North Shields.

7 May - Ride Pt Lincoln - Mt Hope (85km)
Accom will be at the Mt Hope hall, showers/toilets will be available.
The meal will be a BBQ at the hall.

8 May - Ride Mt Hope to Elliston (95km)
Accom is yet TBC, but will be either at the Caravan Park, Football club. Showers/toilets available.
The meal will be either be a BBQ or at the Elliston Hotel, this will be confirmed.

9 May - Ride Elliston to Streaky Bay (125km)
Accom is yet TBC, but will be either at the Caravan Park, Football club or race course. Showers/toilets available.
The meal will either be at the Streaky Bay Hotel or Moceans Restaurant.

10 May - Ride Streaky to Ceduna (110km)
A dinner/fundraiser is planned at the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel.
For those non-Ceduna residents, a list of accom options will be included with registration.

At this stage, the ride is $200 per person, this will include all breakfasts and lunches/drinks/snacks (grog not included). Only dinner on Friday night is included at this stage, but possibly Saturday night depending on the availability of the Elliston Hotel. This price will also include a race jersey and insurance. Supporter/driver price will be $100, this includes meals and insurance as above and a t shirt.

The website will be up and running shortly and you will be able to download registration forms from this site. The site will have all details you require.

All participants will need a swag/bedding and other personal kit which will be outlined on the website. I will send an expression of interest to you all next Monday as we need to confirm exact numbers re catering/accom etc. The cut off date for registration is the 15th of April.

Twilight Ride Report

An apology to Josh for forgetting (a) that the ride was on and (b) that it was his ride. Dene did his best to contact people at the last minute, to round up some some riders. I received a call after work about the ride route, so I made a quick plan for an easy terrain but with a distance to make it worthwhile coming.
Josh had a good hilly ride planned, with a slightly less hilly option. Unfortunately, it was too difficult for some, so instead of breaking up a small group of five, we took the easier route.
Don't be disheartened Josh, your plan is a very good one and we will do it.
That said, it was a perfect evening for a ride and we set off for London St. via Porter St. and crossed Kirton Point. (London St. is 'crap' for bikes). We bypassed the marina and left town via Proper Bay Rd., turning around at the old BHP railway x-ing to head back. A little detour up Pine Freezers road to boost the heart rate and right onto Western Approach road for an easy run into town along Mortlock Tce. We finished at Del Giornos for a drink together before heading home.

1st Grand/Mini Slam, Ride Report

We have ten riders who are challenging themselves in the "Slam" series this year, endeavouring to cover distances of between 40kms and 200kms. They are; Nigel Carr, Ross Challinger, John Daniels, Max Dutschke, Trevor Garnaut, Garry Hibble, Dene Lockwood, Mary Lockwood, Raelene Mason and Josh Shepherdson. I'm sure everyone wishes them well both in their training and in reaching their goals.
For the first ride of 40kms/80kms, the start/finish point was the yacht club. It was a pity that the toilets were locked. As one passer by commented, "You don't get much for your rates these days do you?"
The 40km riders went to Sleaford and back. The 80km riders went to the Coomunga railway x-ing, back to the yacht club, then out to Sleaford. On returning to town a 5km loop was added to make up the 80kms. This was a particularly good effort given the extremely blustery conditions. But, to put it in the words of our intrepid Martin S. (albeit a few years ago), "It is character building!"
Thankyou to Kingsley for providing a welcome refreshment break, which made the last 30kms easier to face.
A particular pat on the back to both Garry and Nigel for making the trip down from Tumby Bay so early. Next time, when dragging yourselves out of bed, think of them already on the road.

Some of the Pedallers are heading off for some awesome tours.
Peter and Lana Sheridan are heading off to cycle through France and Spain in April and will be away three months. Did a bit of practise on the windy weekend of the 27th &28th of February. Cycle to Coffin Bay took 2 ¼ hours to get there and 3 ½ hours to get back the next day. Jeff has kindly offered to do the newsletter whilst we are away. Thanks!

Raelene is off overseas to cycle with some old chums in May in Germany and France. Have a wonderful time! You can’t keep a good cyclist down!

As most of you would be aware, we, as a club, try to keep a bit of interest in cycling by holding a "different" ride at least once a month. With the great weather we've been having this could be increased to include twilight or night rides, breakfast rides, or by finishing a ride by having lunch or tea (dinner) together.
The aim is to cater for all abilities and bike preferences. Any suggestions are most welcome. So if you have an idea or a ride plan to share, step up and lead us astray!

Grand Slam Series

Australia Day Ride

Seven rode on this perfect cycling morning to fly the flag for the club on Australia Day. Considering that some were away at the Tour Down Under and the Tunarama Fun Run was on, this was a fair number.
From the hall we turned left and headed to the start of Oxford Tce through to Flinder’s Hwy and right at Happy Valley Rd. We had a pleasant 45 minute workout with a couple of hills, some welcome downhills and a short meander along the newly completed share path through Eyre Park. To avoid another hill the last few kms were modified to get onto Oxford Tce near the clinic. From there we skirted the Catholic Church boundary to Porter Street then to King Street.
The tent was in sight and the smell of bacon & eggs was too much for some... a couple of riders "didn't see" the police cars and the policeman stopping the traffic to let runners through 'safely'!
Breaky was most welcome for the 4 riders who braved the line-up...time flies when you're having fun.
So, if a good ride, meeting people, having a few laughs and someone to cook your breakfast appeals to you, then join us next year for more of the same.

This Bike S.A. Ride was the inaugural ride for women and girls, hopefully to be held annually now as it was such a success. Over 500 took part ranging from around two years to approx 65+ and the money raised was donated to the Children's Oncology Foundation.
We began and finished in Elder Park where there was catering and entertainment. There were all shapes and sizes in both bikes and riders and the excitement in the air was tangible. The four ride choices ranged from flat 15kms to hilly 50kms, with one group returning by train.
All were ther for a common reason but some also had personal goals.
Not being used to the city 'by bike', I opted to step out of my comfort zone and take to the hills. We had a police escort out of the city, then we were on our own.
I had a ball and I encourage anyone to take part in a 'big group' ride if you have never done so and to do it again if you have.

Tumby Bay ride December 2009

Well supported ride with 15 riders. Gary's brother Peter joined us in his trike see last post. Nigel introduced us to his girlfriend Natalie. Gary joined the rest of us from Lincoln. Great ride around the surrounds of Tumby and Tumby island. Took us places we did not know about. We all had a nice lunch afterwards in the shade on the nice foreshore of the beach.

Ride Report Nigel’s ride December 20th 2009
A brilliant day greeted twelve riders, most of who travelled from Port Lincoln to Tumby for the day. We had a visit from Garry’s brother, Peter Hibble, who dropped in to show us his new Greenspeed recumbent trike. We departed from the Rotunda on the foreshore at about 10:30am and headed for the dirt. Anna left us to it when we reached the end of the bitumen and rode around Tumby as she wasn’t confident about riding the terrain. I took the rest of the group on a great single track adventure! We toured around the western edge of town, which unfortunately took us past the local tip that had a bit of a smell about it!
We ended up on the island estate and rode to a beach locally known as “ Ski Beach”. There we rode up a short steep incline that had a piece of railway line at the bottom. Dene took a run-up and hit the incline fast and quickly reached the top, only to find that he had pinched flatted over the railway line! There was a break while the flat tyre was fixed and then we proceeded to return to the rotunda for lunch. We nearly got there but Dene’s rear tyre decided not to hold up for the trip and he had to stop and repair it again.
As we reached the rotunda, Kiwi realised that his tyre was flat also! I then helped him to fix his tyre as he had not changed a tube before. We all then enjoyed a meal from the local takeaway shop, sitting under the big shade on the lawn. All had an enjoyable ride.

Garry's brother Peter joined us with his new Greenspeed trike an X-5.
Awesome machine. He kindly let me have a spin. Works lots better than my humble home made old girl. He was cruising at 30ks no worries. Very nice and very comfortable. Folds as well well thought out design. As a Greenspeed fan I would expect nothing less from the gold standard manufacturers of trikes.

Yes, yes, yes. Beauty and the Bike is the much anticipated documentary from, among others, the Darlington Cycling Campaign in the UK and it premieres on December 9th, 2009. Above is an 8 minute teaser/trailer.

The question leading to the making of the film is a simple one:

"Why do British girls stop cycling?"

"By simply asking this basic question, the film reveals the damage that has been done by 50 years of car-centric transport policies. Whilst we fill our lives with debates about risk assessment, cycle helmets, cycle training and marketing strategies to try to persuade people to cycle more, the basic barriers to cycling remain untouched - generous urban planning towards the car, and the resultant poor motorist behaviour towards cyclists. TRIATHLETES AT THE WORLDS PERTH 2009

Peter Sheridan, Ross Allen, Shaun Parkinson and Sylvia Dansie competed in the ITU Long Distance World Championships 2009. Conditions were not good, with 25 km/h winds, a 3km choppy swim in the Swan accompanied by lots of jellyfish. The bike ride of 80kms ranged from 45km/h with a tail wind to 20km/h into the wind. By the time they got to the run the wind had dropped and conditions were very hot, up to
34C but scenic. Finish times were Peter 5:58:23, Ross 6:06:55, Sylvia 6:00:17 and Shaun 5:01:32.

RIDE REPORT FOR THE MTB RIDE TO SLEAFORD 18TH OCTOBER

This ride was designed to suit riders of varying abilities. Thirteen riders took part including two first timers and an introduction of the club trailer to several members.

Rode out to the National Park entrance, with some opting to ride the Investigator trail. We regrouped and continued to the Conservation Park. The easy off road track around the Sleaford Mere was enjoyable and picturesque with the blue sky reflection on the water.

We soon arrived at our favourite destination, the club trailer. Dene had the kettles boiling, the chairs out and a great array of healthy snacks awaiting us.

Although the head wind home was a challenge for some, everyone opted to ride. This was a good effort for the newer riders and all are keen to go on another similar ride….later!

Night rides during December and January with Dene

Rotary ride around Australia

Raelene went to the Rotary Ride around Australia Port Lincoln dinner on the 17th and said it was very interesting hearing the stories of the trip so far.
Mary and Jeff rode out with the RotaryAround Australia cyclists on the Friday morning out to Tumby Bay. Eyre Peninsula put on a bursting head wind for the riders.
Many of whom, were tired after the big ride from Elliston in the rain on the Wednesday.
It was a shame that the head wind did not allow much conversation with the riders.
It looked to me that a trip lik this with such a tight schedule would be hard work with rest days being eaten up riding, to maintain the schedule.
However every one looked to be in good spirits and keen to get on with it.
They had a very efficient back up with three vehicles and a great trailer.
They have a website on the net with some interesting blogs detailing their day to day life on the road.

Ride to Coffin Bay

Great ride with 6 riders starting from Arteyria. When waiting for a regroup at the top of the Western approach ride we were joined by a new rider Gordon. Gordon is from South Korea and works in Lincoln. He is keen to cycle more and it would be good to see him on more rides. We had a head wind with a cloudy start out to Coffins. After several regroups at strategic spots we arrived in Coffins more than ready for a coffee. At the top of the hill into Coffins we were met by Raelene who was on her bike for her first time after her knee operation. Great to see. A nice coffee was had by all at the “Oyster Beds”. Dene and Jeff had an Orange and almond cake that was divine. Kingsley, Faye and John had met us at the oyster beds to pick up those who did not want to ride home. Kingsley and Raelene were last seen going for a romantic seaside ride around town.
Jeff, Mary, Dene and Gordon started off on the way home looking forward to a nice tail wind.
Unfortunately for Gordon he started to feel the distance after leaving for home. We decided that rather than push on and for Gordon not to enjoy it. Leonie was called and came and picked up Gordon. Hope to see him next week on a normal shorter ride which I am sure he will handle no problems. Those remaining then rode home arriving back in Lincoln about 2pm tired but having enjoyed our ride. Thanks to those that provided transport home for those doing the shorter ride.

Surprise Surprise Study says cars cause 90% of accidents

The University of Toronto recently published an interview with Professor Chris Cavacuiti of the department of family and community medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital in which he quotes a study that found bicyclists are the cause of less than 10% of bike-car accidents. From the interview:
While there is a public perception that cyclists are usually the cause of accidents between cars and bikes, an analysis of Toronto police collision reports shows otherwise: The most common type of crash in this study involved a motorist entering an intersection and either failing to stop properly or proceeding before it was safe to do so. The second most common crash type involved a motorist overtaking unsafely. The third involved a motorist opening a door onto an oncoming cyclist. The study concluded that cyclists are the cause of less than 10 per cent of bike-car accidents in this study.
The available evidence suggests that collisions have far more to do with aggressive driving than aggressive cycling.
I believe the study quoted by Professor Cavacuiti is the Toronto Bicycle/Motor-Vehicle Collision Study (2003). The full study can be viewed at the link below.

E bike across Canada

Every now and then I come across an article that defies description… this is one of them.
Justin Lemire-Elmore builds his own bike, not a regular bike but not a recumbent either, a bit of a knock up that looks strange. Something that I can identify with.

Justin then spends a month riding his electric bike across Canada last summer. He made the 7000+Km journey from Vancouver to Halifax in 30 days using a mere $10 worth of electricity to recharge his bike. He put together a rather bizarre looking semi-recumbent bicycle to hold all of his gear. The motor controller, charge controller, battery packs and lighting system were all his own design. He has a captivating 2 hour presentation embedded below in which he describes all the problems he had with his equipment during the trip as well as all the great experiences the journey offered.

I have watched the video and it is well worth watching.

Good Morning Members and Friends,
- welcome
It is my pleasure once again to present the Presidents Report for PP. The 2008 -2009 year has been a year of consolidation and as I look back on our achievements, I am pleased to say that we have again achieved a great deal, even though I was thinking that this has been a quieter year than previous years.
We had a number of different rides that stand out and need to be mentioned, - we established a strong link with the Adelaide Touring Cyclist Group when we hosted their tour of Eyre Peninsula in October, and I do want to thank all those involved with ferrying the riders, some 20 of , to Coffin Bay when we had absolutely dreadful cycling weather.
The catering was again a credit to all involved and I really appreciate the help from the few who came along to the Templtonia Ride in October and enjoyed the breakfast and the cameraderie with the group.
We have had several local rides -Tumby Bay and Coffin Bay and Memory Cove on MTB. The Tumby Bay event was a road bike ride organised by Garry Hibble. It will remain an outstanding day as we had kayaks for all, as well as our ride from Tumby Bay to Yallunda Flat and back.
Several times we rode to Point Boston Peninsula and back and Dene has established himself as our resident MTB trails expert and is very considerate of all riders when planning his rides.
We were fortunate to have Sylvia Dansie talk to the group about her experience in Hawaii for the Iron Woman event held last October,and the lead up to it - that was an inspiring evening and I think if you missed that you should bail her up and ask about it one day, her dedication to training was exceptional.

We have again excelled as caterers, this time for our staunch supporter Alex Castley's 80th birthday. The team that did the catering were very happy with the day and we so enjoyed giving something back to Alex (and Kathleen) who have been supportive and involved with the Peninsula Pedallers since we evolved as a club.
The issue of ride rules, common courtesy and etiquette continues to be at the fore front of our minds and we are happy to report that the Club has stayed safe and not had too many problems with traffic, but we do need to ride according to the road rules to set the example.
On the lobbying for shared trails here in and around Port Lincoln I think the Club can claim some joy from the work now happening on the foreshore out toward North Shields. It is a direct result of our submission for shared use paths to Council and I feel that we are making slow but positive progress.
In closing, The success of any club is directly dependant on the input from the members. We have a number of new members and it is pleasing to see, - I would like to see more people on their bikes at the rides during the next 12 months, thanks to my committee for your support and for regular attendance and input at monthly meetings.
On that note, it has been a great success with our revolving meeting hosting, and I thank all those who did host a meeting, it certainly shared the load for all, special thanks to our untiring secretary,Jeff, our new treasurer Ross, and newsletter editor Lana for all the work they have done throughout the year, its never easy, but sharing the load all helps, I wish you all happy and safe cycling for the 09/10 year.

Sunday 19th July MTB Denes' Ride Report

With the pick of the weather for the month, eager cyclists headed our for a great morning ride. The ride was definitely suitable for both hybrid and MTB. The group headed along Mortlock Tce and turned up Tenant St., to weave their way out to the old New West Road track and cycled alongside the main road to turn right onto the road past the prison and the bottom of the Golf Course, across the road onto Chapman Rd, right through to Haigh Drive. This proved to be fantastic. The road has been improved, upgraded and surprise – sealed from the top of the hill all the way down to the highway. One cyclist was heard to say that their computer stopped at 82kmh. (That’s because they either became airborne or shut their eyes because they were going too fast!)
The group then collected another rider as they cycled the trail into Lincoln for coffee. Thanks Dene for another well planned ride.

HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY ALEX!

Alex Castley has been a Peninsula Pedaller for many years and he has continued to be a financial member to this day. I remember when I first started riding he would ride up beside and offer his help and advice in a constructed and gentlemanly manner. Over his many years of riding I’m sure he helped and encouraged many others cyclists. Thank you Alex!

Alex celebrated his birthday with many of his old friends over the years with a surprise get together. Thank to those PPS who helped cater.
